Public Mass Shootings: Counterfactual Trend Analysis of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban

Trends in the 5-year simple moving average of public mass shootings in the United States from 1966 to 2022 that did and did not involve an assault weapon. FAWB: Federal Assault Weapons Ban. The results suggest the FAWB had a sizeable impact on the number of public mass shootings in the United States. From 1966 to 2022, public mass shootings trended upward. However, the trend was interrupted while the FAWB was in place.
