Most studies estimating the percentage of SMM engaging in chemsex have significant limitations, such as including only SMM living with HIV [12-14], recruiting participants from sexually transmitted infection clinics (where high-risk practices are overrepresented) [15-20], having small sample sizes [12,13,15,16,20], or identifying any use of certain substances as chemsex [13,14,18,19,21].

Furthermore, heightened societal anti-immigrant sentiment and intensified law enforcement practices may create a “chilling effect,” pushing Latino SMM further away from facilities offering pre-exposure prophylaxis (Pr EP) and other HIV prevention services [10]. Pr EP uptake among Latino SMM is substantially lower than that among White SMM [11], with only 14% of Pr EP-eligible Latina/o/x (henceforward “Latino”) individuals being prescribed Pr EP in 2020 compared with 61% of White SMM [12].
