Communal Load Sharing of Miscarriage Experiences: Thematic Analysis of Social Media Community Support

Miscarriage is a more common phenomenon than people seem to realize, occurring in 15% of recognized pregnancies [1]. Miscarriage is defined by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology as the loss of pregnancy before 22 weeks of gestation [1]. One in 4 women will experience a miscarriage during their lifetime [2], so why do so few women know how common it is and what effects a miscarriage can have on a person’s life?

Internet-Based Information Behavior After Pregnancy Loss: Interview Study

Internet-Based Information Behavior After Pregnancy Loss: Interview Study

Pregnancy loss is often colloquially referred to as miscarriage. By pregnancy loss, we mean the unintended loss of a desired pregnancy at any gestational stage. Pregnancy loss is an important context for investigating information behavior as it is distressing, stigmatizing, disruptive, and traumatizing for many. It challenges people’s identities as expecting parents and changes interpersonal relationships but is generally absent from societal narratives of grief or reproduction [15].

Some of these medical conditions could have made the miscarriage more likely [14]. Another major limitation is the failure to appropriately match case-control groups as the case group had an older population, more SAB, higher BMI, and more smokers during pregnancy.

Texting Condolences: Adapting mHealth Programs After Unexpected Pregnancy and Infant Outcomes

Thus, a woman may continue to receive messages from the program about actions to keep her pregnancy or baby healthy after the occurrence of a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death. Women could end messaging by sending a STOP message, but this leaves these women without access to a potentially valuable source of support. Women with adverse outcomes may especially benefit from access to advice and encouragement at this difficult time.
