Stimulants such as methylphenidate, lisdexamfetamine, and modafinil are highly potent pharmacologic treatment options for hypersomnolence disorders, including narcolepsy or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders/attention deficit disorders (ADHDs/ADDs). ADHDs/ADDs are some of the most common diagnosed psychiatric disorders worldwide with a prevalence of 5.3% worldwide in the years of 1978 to 2010 among people aged 18 years or younger [1].

In 2010, newly diagnosed narcolepsy cases among children and adolescents were reported in several European countries as a consequence of comprehensive national vaccination campaigns with Pandemrix against H1 N1 influenza (swine flu) that took place during the winter of 2009–2010 [1]. In Sweden, approximately 350 young persons acquired narcolepsy after vaccination against swine flu [2,3]. Narcolepsy is a neurological disease that involves a disturbed regulation of wakefulness and sleep.
