Using Text Messaging Ecological Momentary Assessment to Record Changes in e-Cigarette and Combustible Cigarette Use: Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial

Using Text Messaging Ecological Momentary Assessment to Record Changes in e-Cigarette and Combustible Cigarette Use: Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial

EMA data can provide useful insight into the changes in cigarette use and other factors, such as craving and satisfaction, over time and with greater granularity than study visits that are typically weeks or several months apart.

Author's Reply: Expanding the Scope: Reflections on Digital Smoking Cessation Strategies for Diverse Age Groups

When prompted about group-based components in digital platforms, our study population believed that the benefits of doing so would include learning new strategies for quitting and connecting with other older adults attempting to quit cigarette smoking. However, our sample discussed concerns about interpersonal challenges (eg, conflicts and negativity) among individuals, which many had witnessed on social media platforms.

Association Between Cigarette and Bidi Purchase Behavior (Loose vs Pack) and Health Warning Label Exposure: Findings From the Tobacco Control Policy India Survey and In-Depth Interviews With People Who Smoke

Association Between Cigarette and Bidi Purchase Behavior (Loose vs Pack) and Health Warning Label Exposure: Findings From the Tobacco Control Policy India Survey and In-Depth Interviews With People Who Smoke

Cigarette packages are an effective medium for reaching individuals who purchase cigarette packs because they are potentially exposed to HWLs every time they reach for a cigarette [9,10]. Moreover, exposure to HWLs is also associated with higher-risk perceptions, increased knowledge and awareness regarding harms from tobacco use, and has a greater potential to enable individuals to quit smoking [11-14].

Expectations and Preferences for Digital Cessation Treatment: Multimethods Study Among Older Adults Who Smoke Cigarettes

Expectations and Preferences for Digital Cessation Treatment: Multimethods Study Among Older Adults Who Smoke Cigarettes

Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of cancer, preventable disease, and death in the United States, with tobacco morbidity and mortality disproportionately impacting older adults [2]. Cigarette smoking exacerbates numerous chronic health conditions that are more common in older age (eg, diabetes or chronic pain) [2-5]. Annual smoking-related mortality is almost twice as high for older (392,000 deaths) compared to younger (163,000 deaths) adults [2].

Leveraging Ecological Momentary Assessment Data to Characterize Individual Mobility: Exploratory Pilot Study in Rural Uganda

Leveraging Ecological Momentary Assessment Data to Characterize Individual Mobility: Exploratory Pilot Study in Rural Uganda

Of the participants reporting alcohol use, cigarette smoking, and condomless sex with a non–long-term partner, each behavior was reported a range of 1-72, 1-37, and 1-18 times, respectively (Table 2), and 17 (74%), 5 (55%), and 8 (57%) participants reported those behaviors at 2 or more unique locations (Table 3). Of the participants reporting, alcohol use, smoking, and condomless sex were reported 0-70, 1-36, and 1-11 times away from the home location (ie, outside the 100-m buffer), respectively.

Investigation of the Association Between e-Cigarette Smoking and Oral Mucosal Health Status Among Young People: Protocol for a Case-Control Trial

Investigation of the Association Between e-Cigarette Smoking and Oral Mucosal Health Status Among Young People: Protocol for a Case-Control Trial

This presupposed risk is likely proportional to the frequency and duration of e-cigarette smoking. The oral mucosal health of participants will be determined by determining the presence of white spots in the mouth (the main feature of the oral mucosa that is damaged by smoking behavior). The primary outcome is the effect of e-cigarette smoking on oral mucosal conditions.

Trial Participants’ Perceptions of the Impact of Ecological Momentary Assessment on Smoking Behaviors: Qualitative Analysis

Trial Participants’ Perceptions of the Impact of Ecological Momentary Assessment on Smoking Behaviors: Qualitative Analysis

The pilot RCT was performed to determine the feasibility and acceptability of an e-cigarette–based smoking intervention and to compare the effectiveness of counseling and e-cigarette use on smoking outcomes to that of counseling and NRT [16]. Text message–based EMA data collection was used to record smoking patterns.

e-Cigarette Use and the Cessation of Tobacco Cigarette Smoking: Protocol for an Umbrella Review

e-Cigarette Use and the Cessation of Tobacco Cigarette Smoking: Protocol for an Umbrella Review

e-Cigarettes, termed electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), were invented in 2003 to be a cigarette cessation device [1]. The substantially reduced toxicant profile of ENDS compared to cigarettes [2,3] has motivated researchers to investigate its potential for supporting cigarette smoking cessation. As the number of clinical studies piled up, the first systematic review on ENDS for smoking cessation was published in 2014 by the Cochrane Group [4], and 21 systematic reviews were published by 2017 [5].
